About the host Jon Butts

Our Family (including three brothers and a sister) moved to Largo Florida from Pennsylvania in 1955. I graduated from Largo High in 1967 and did a tour of duty in Vietnam where I turned 21. After being discharged from the Army I moved to Tampa and earned an AA in Business from HCC, started a landscape nursery business in Tampa and met Debbie. We purchased 55 acres north of Plant City in 1985 and started growing ornamental trees, mainly palms.  I also worked as a farm mechanic, and we had a small herd of cows. In 1989 I changed course and started growing specialty vegetables with my brother Karl until 1997, when Karl and I split up and I switched my efforts back to the tree business.

In 1999 I discovered Intentional Communities and formed the Ecofarmfl vision. By 2001 I had bought our first four solar modules and planted a one acre organic garden. I started hosting the Sustainable Living program on WMNF Community radio in 2005; and in 2006 we were the first to hook-up a solar-electric system with TECO Energy.

In 2009 I not only received the News and Public affairs programmer of the year award from WMNF but was also named one of Creative Loafing’ Magazine’s Green One Hundred.
